Ruby Newlands netted twice, Cassie McGregor scored on her home ice in Dumfries and netminder Kayla Poole secured a 14-shot shutout.

There were few clear-cut chances in the first period and the closest GB came was when Ellin Rees shot wide and Ellie Patrick’s effort bobbled over.

In the second session, Poole made two good saves from close-range attempts from Melanie Hernandez and Luisa Wilson while at the other end, Newlands just failed to poke the puck past Valeria Cordero on the doorstep.

Moments later, Newlands danced her way through the Mexico defence and beat Cordero near-side to GB the lead (36:40).

McGregor scored GB’s second from close-range (43:42), while Poole denied Mexico’s Stephanie Lemarroy on a breakaway.

Newlands put the seal on the victory firing past Cordero from the right circle for her second of the night (58:25).

Australia secured the gold medal earlier in the day with a 3-2 victory over Latvia.

The final day of matches takes place tomorrow with Britain, Latvia and Netherlands battling it out for the silver and bronze medals.

GB host Australia in tomorrow’s final game of the tournament (8pm).
