The World Championship Division I Group A in Nottingham has captured the imagination of the public with big crowds over the opening weekend.

The tournament is one of the most prestigious international ice hockey events ever to be held on home ice in the UK, with promotion on the line to the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship in Czechia.

Great Britain’s opening-day 4-0 victory over Korea was watched by over 4,000 people,

Last night’s 5-4 overtime against Poland saw an attendance of 5,076 – the highest to see a GB game in the UK since the 1999 World Championship Qualifiers in Sheffield.

Chair of the Organising Committee, Andy French, said: “The support was fantastic over the weekend for all six games.

“The IIHF and all the teams in the tournament have commented on the superb backing.

“The atmosphere in the arena has been remarkable and it has certainly helped the GB team in the past couple of days.”

The tournament continues tomorrow starting with Romania against Korea (12:30) before Italy face Poland (16:30).

In the final game of the day, GB take-on Lithuania (19:30).
